The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) is once again at the center of bankrolling political sabotage in Zimbabwe, after leaked internal communications and institutional documents surfaced pointing to a coordinated campaign, dressed up as labour activism, to destabilise the Government of Zimbabwe.
Today’s Extra Ordinary General Council Meeting at the Holiday Inn Harare at 10 am is the flashpoint. Publicly, the meeting is billed as a challenge to the suspension of ZCTU Secretary General Tirivanhu Marimo. Privately, according to highly placed sources, it is an FES-financed operation from top to bottom – venue costs covered, attendance allowances paid out to mobilize a hand-picked roster of activists, among them Ostallos Siziba and Obey Masaraure.
The stated agenda is procedural: whether Marimo’s suspension by the National Executive Committee was constitutionally sound. The real agenda is twofold. First, to engineer the removal of ZCTU President Florence Mucha Taruvinga – notably not an FES graduate – who has refused to let the labour federation be turned into a launchpad for street chaos. Second, to use the ZCTU itself as the vehicle for relaunching Nelson Chamisa’s political career, with the labour movement repurposed as his comeback platform.
The paper trail is real. A press release dated July 9, 2026, signed by Taruvinga, confirmed Marimo’s suspension over serious misconduct, with Kudakwashe Munengiwa installed as acting Secretary General. The response was immediate: a petition dated July 10, signed by FES-aligned affiliates including Peter Mutasa of ZIBAWU and representatives of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), forced today’s showdown meeting into being within seventy-two hours.
None of this happens in a vacuum. FES has faced recurring accusations over the years of running training pipelines for anti-establishment politicians and youth activists – Pride Mkono among the names repeatedly cited. The pattern is consistent: civic education as cover, regime change as the objective.
